Football is a replacement for politics. The masses need to be able to pick sides and have some sort of a team to play for and the powers-that-be would much rather have people all worked up about football than about the important stuff. Back in the seventies almost all newspapers got rid of the politics section and replaced it with the sports section just so we would all be uninformed about politics, and it seems to have worked out quite well for them. Go Team ! !
